Storm Damage — When and How to Document

How and When to Document Storm Damage

When a storm rolls through, the damage it leaves behind can feel overwhelming. The best thing you can do for your property—and your insurance claim—is to document everything quickly and thoroughly.

Start Immediately

As soon as it’s safe to go outside, take photos and videos of all visible damage. Begin with wide shots of the property, then move in for close-ups of broken windows, roof shingles, water intrusion, or damaged equipment. Time-stamped images are best.

Capture Every Angle

Don’t just snap a few pictures—walk around the property and record the same damage from different angles. This creates a fuller story for your claim and prevents disputes later.

Don’t Forget the Details

Document things inside as well: ceiling stains, warped floors, ruined furniture, or business equipment. If temporary repairs are needed to stop further damage, photograph before and after you make them.

Keep a Running Log

Write down dates, times, and what you observe. Save receipts for any emergency repairs or temporary lodging if the property isn’t usable.

Why It Matters

Strong documentation speeds up the claim process, helps adjusters see the full scope of loss, and protects you if questions come up later.
